Great Zimbabwe is one of Africa’s most remarkable archaeological and architectural sites — and a powerful symbol of Zimbabwe’s heritage.
Located near present-day Masvingo, the Great Zimbabwe ruins were built and developed between the 11th and 15th centuries by ancestors of the Shona-speaking peoples. The settlement became an important centre for trade, culture and political life in the region.
Its impressive stone walls were constructed without mortar, using carefully shaped granite blocks. The Great Enclosure, the Hill Complex and the Valley Ruins remain among the site’s most distinctive features.
The name Zimbabwe is closely associated with the stone structures. It is generally connected to the Shona term dzimbahwe, referring to a stone house or settlement.
Great Zimbabwe was also part of wider regional and international trade networks. Archaeological discoveries at the site include objects indicating connections with distant parts of Africa and the wider Indian Ocean trading world.
Today, Great Zimbabwe stands as more than an archaeological site. It represents the creativity, organisation, craftsmanship and achievements of the people who built it.
